The outstanding mechanical property of ABS is its high impact strength.
The high impact strength comes from the absorption of external impact energy by the rubber component of ABS and the inhibition of the development of silver patterns.
The impact strength of ABS decreases slowly with temperature and can maintain more than 1/3 of the original impact strength even at temperatures of -40°C.
The mechanical properties of ABS are related to the rubber content in its composition.
The impact toughness increases with the increase of rubber content, but the creep resistance of the material decreases, thermal expansion and melt viscosity increase. With less rubber content, the tensile strength, rigidity, hardness, and heat resistance of the material are increased.
In addition to impact strength, other mechanical properties of ABS are not very high, but it has no obvious mechanical defects, showing good overall mechanical properties, and thus is widely used as a general-purpose plastic and engineering plastics.
